Newsdecember 25, 2008 - Best wishes. We would like to wish you a merry christmas and all the best for 2009! May all your dreams come true, and hopefully it's going to be a year full of music and TNQ..! We've got a little present for you; It's a preview of what's coming this year; our first album! Here you can hear one of the tracks of the album, Sunshine, but you'll also get a good impression of our stay at the Fattoria Musica Studio's in Osnabrück and the whole recording process. Enjoy..! december 01, 2008 - New Year Celebration gig..!Time isn't flying at the moment. It seems to take ages before we can go mixing... But that isn't why I'm writing: Our hometown-favourite jazzstage Paradox has asked us to do the 2009 opening gig..! So we we'll be officially opening the new year there on the 9th of january. How nice that is..! Be sure to order your tickets soon as it's going to be a wild party with some special guests... october 20, 2008 - Update. It's two weeks later now; time for an update. What's the score..? Well, we're still very excited about the recordings we made. There's still some minor discussions about which take we should choose, but I think we got 90% pinned down. Chris is already busy with some minor preparations, and we're going to mix on the 18th of december in Studio LeRoy in Amsterdam. That's Chris' main mixing spot, where he knows his ways... Maybe twice as busy as we are, Fred is doing some great work, watching, listening and editing hours of tape he recorded while we were playing. He's sent us some previews and they are awsome! You're definatly going to see some of that soon!! Keep going, Fredski! Well, that's it for now. Keep posted. october 07, 2008 - Rise and shine everybody!!!How time flies! Especially when you're having fun! Our second day in this beautiful place, and it really feels like the perfect place to be. The environnement is so calm and peacefull, you can work very, very hard but you just don't get tired because the nature gives you free refills immediately! Today started the same as yesterday. The piano-tuner made sure that the piano was pitch perfect again, as today's program included recording the only two 'ballads' on the list, 'The Abyss' and '13 Solutions', so it had to be spot on!! We had breakfast, after which we all had our own little warming up before starting with 'The Abyss'. The Abyss has always been one of my favourite songs. It's such a beautiful melody, with a great tension and emotion in it, and soloing on it seems like you fall into your own abyss. Anyway, we had a pretty good first run, but we did another one to see if we could even improve. But the second take wasn't as good as we hoped for, so the first take it was going to be!!! After 'The Abyss' it was time for the most appropriate song we could choose today; 'The 2nd Day'. This is a 3/4 feel Coltranesque tune with a uplifting feel. You'd like to dance to it..! It started with a very groovy intro by Jeroen after which Pascal and I kicked in. Whaaaaaah!!! Joris smashed the head in, and he and Jeroen made some beautiful solo's! This tune also didn't take long before we nailed it, so we were alive, kicking, and going like hell!! In between takes we went to listen to some of the recordings, had a little chat with Chris, Fred (on cam) or who ever was in the neighbourhood, and had little walks in- and outside the building. The fireplace and the couches around it was also one of our favourite hangouts where we would burn our asses... The afternoon had two more songs waiting to be recorded; '13 Solutions' and 'Sunshine'. Recording '13 Solutions' is always a pleasure. Every take is an adventure itself. We did five takes, and I think they're all beautiful. It's going to be difficult to pick one, although we already made a little edit to one track, so I think we're preferring one... Last best! Or that's how it should be... 'Sunshine', our #1 hit record, turned out to be a bit of a struggle. We did four takes, but I think we could have done with only one if I wouldn't have funked up the ending. Anyway, I think we've got a nice take that could be a beautiful opening track on the record. So it's a wrap! We did it! 9 songs, recorded in two days, in the most beautiful surrounding, and with the best crew ever!! The dream continues, we're going to mix in Amsterdam and hopefully we are going to be ready before Christmas. But hey, we'll see... I would just like to say thank you to Dominique, who was very helpfull in the process (but please don't ever take pictures during a recoring...), and we would also like to thank Benno, who co-founded the best studio within a 1000km radius, according to Chris. And we can only agree! And what about Fred, who has been around us for two days, and registered everything. (please do not listen to all the audio please... Especially all the car audio...) But how can we forget Chris. Man, you rock!!! Thank you so much for the last couple of days! We had a blast, and hope you had one too! Let's make a kick-ass record..! The way back was pretty much as miserable as when we drove to Osnabrück. But fortunately, Chris made us a little CD with the nine tracks we recorded. We were back in a flash..! october 06, 2008 - Half way already!Today started at 8 am, and to see the studio in broad daylight is even more incredible! The studio is situated on top of the hills around Osnabrück, and you're actually in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nature!! Amazing! Jeroen headed off to the local bakery to get us some bread, and in the meanwhile, the piano-tuner was busy preparing the piano for the first day. When Jeroen returned, we had some breakfast, after which Chris continued with putting the microphones in place together with Dominique, our helping hand these days. Fred, who is staying in a little hotel in Osnabrück, arrived and immediately started shooting footage. I'm afraid he'll be doing this the next couple of days... When Chris was finished, it was time for a big soundcheck, as well as making a good setup for the headphones. That turned out to be pretty hard, as Jeroen, Joris & Tom were standing in the same room, and Pascal and I each had a separate room. We each had to find a way to get the right adjustment, and Chris had to help us to do so... In the end, it worked, and we ready to record! As we were waiting for Tom to arrive, we started off with the recording of 'Out of the Dreamworld'. It took some takes, and a little discussion, but got it right, and nailed it in the fifth take. After that, we had a quick lunch, and Tom arrived almost at the same time... The recordings with Tom started with 'Of a Different Kind', which is one of my favourite songs. The energy is enormous and it's a great live piece! The first take was so good and full of energy that we didn't need a second one. Great solo's, brilliant sound en sky high energy! That's the way we like it! The next song was 'Death of a Ladybird'. We had a incredible first take, but the ending went slightly wrong. So we made a second run, but that wasn't as good as we hoped it would be. In the end, we fixed the first take, and kept it. We went off on a jump start with two one-take recordings..! The vibe was great, so we went on recording Daybreak, Jacobs Blues and a new song: Portrait of a Picture. Portrait of a Picture is a tune with a beautiful melody for the two saxophones with a bass/piano groove underneath it. Joris and Tom made some beautiful solo's, so we were fortunate enough to make some runs... Daybreak and Jacobs Blues turned out to be two difficult pieces. Especially Jacobs Blues, a piece that we love to play live, became a little bit of a struggle, where we couldn't get it right. But when we finished Daybreak, we had enough pieces, so we called it a day. Tom wanted to go home tonight, so we said goodbye and as he drove off, we listened to the tracks we recorded today. In the end we've already got 5 great pieces, and if tomorrow is going to be the same, we're going to have to make some tough decisions... But first we'll have to see what tomorrow has got in store for us... After a last drink, everybody headed off to their rooms for some sleep... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.... october 05, 2008 - HERE WE ARE..!After an exhausting three our drive thru terrible weather in the deep dark night, we have arrived at the Fattoria Musica Studio's just outside of Osnabrück. And it was worth every minute of it!! Man, it's great here! We've just had a little tour thru the studio and the housing. As I'm writing this, I'm sitting on my bed, just 10m away from my bass that's lying in the recording booth. How about that! No tours to little hotel rooms with a terrible vibe; you can record, sleep, eat, watch tv, surf the web, sit by the big fire, and more in one building. I'm already looking forward to waking up in the morning, grab some coffee, pick up my bass, and start playing! WOW! When we arrived we were welcomed by Chris Weeda, who's going to record us the next couple of days. He's also the one who told us to go here and record. Not only for the great sound of the studio, but obviously also because of the great housing... We brought are own food and drinks, so it won't be necessary to leave the complex in the next couple of days. And there's more to come as we've only seen the interior. Chris immediately made it feel like home, gaves us a grand tour thru the studio, and showed us our rooms. We also put our instruments up, so they can get used to the temperature, after which we had a little drink, before we went to bed... Tomorrow is definately going to be the toughest day, as we are going to record all the songs with Tom. And each and every one of them are heavy up tempo tunes! Nice...! Good night everyone! october 01, 2008 - There's no way back!Today we had the last rehearsal for our record in the Paradox, where we were able to work hard to get everything sorted out. And I think we're ready!! What's left is some more preparation at home and some sleep! But the things we recorded in the pre production sound great! Imagine how it's going to sound on monday in Germany. We're looking forward to it!! There's one thing left. This summer I already wrote that we're going to have a guest on this record. I guess it's time to reveal his identity. The great Dutch tenor player Tom Beek will be coming to Germany on monday to record some songs with us! We did a gig at the Delft Jazzfestival a year ago, and that inspired us to ask him to come along. Tom was also in the Paradox today and it's awesome to see how quick he handles the tunes!! That's going to be a lot of fun too!!! september 20, 2008 - It's getting close now...This week we're going to start with the pre production of our upcoming CD, that will be recorded in two weeks time. Joris has written some new tunes, and we're looking forward to play those! It's always nice to have some new material that hasn't been played yet; it keeps you focused and often the new tunes sound fresh and full of adventure... But of course, we'll also record a lot of tunes you already know, like The Abyss, Of a Different Kind, Jacobs Blues, and so on... And we'll have to do our upmost to stay within 10 min per song, but you never know... We're very fortunate that we are going to have our TNQ cameraman with us in Germany! Fred Timmers is going to join us to capture both days and hopefully we will be able to show you the making of our first record. july 18, 2008 - Preview of Upcoming Events...Is it too quiet around TNQ? Yes? No? Time for an update with some big news! This fall we are going to record our first album! Very exciting news, I think! The main focus will be on these recordings for the next few month. Pascal Vermeer and Jeroen van Vliet were very pleased when we asked them to join us, and we are really glad they are going to! The four of us will record at the Fattoria Musica studio in Germany. This must be one of the best studio's I've ever seen! Does it get any better? Yes, because Chris Weeda, one of the best studio engineers around will be recording and mixing the album. How's that for a change!! We aren't going to reveal to much, as there is going to be a special guest on the album. You'll find out a.s.a.p... For now, enjoy your summer holiday, and be prepared, 'cause we're gonna hit the stage big time in 2009, with a great album coming out!!!
june 28, 2008 - How to combine great music with great food!Good old Rembrandt Frerichs invited the New Quartet to play at the Regentenkamer in The Hague, and we were happy to accept the offer. The Regentenkamer is an old society that has just changed to a new venue after the old neighbours complained to much because the noise. (they even offered them their own VIP seats with special treatment, but they still didn't go for it...) In the new place, they kept the same formula; good music with great Indonesian food. It was too bad that tonight was one of those rare days where the weather was really good in the evening, so I guess most of the people went out to enjoy the beach. We had a small, but gratefull audience, which seemed to enjoy our music. We played some really nice pieces, and they seem to get better every time!!! After the gig we sticked around a little and had a good chat with Fred 'Mr Film' Timmers, who told us that he was playing around with our youtube video's, adding high quality audio to them. Check out our music site to see what I mean... Big up to Fred!! We will be back for more in The Hague..; Please leave the egg out next time... Thanx! :P
may, 2008 - The Best Festivals are held in May!!What a month, again! We got the great opportunity to perform on two of the best festivals in Holland; Jazz in Duketown and The Hague Jazz. Jazz in Duketown - may 11, 2008 Jazz in Duketown is one of the biggest outdoor jazzfestivals in the Netherlands and is held in the beautiful city of 's-Hertogenbosch, which literarely means Duketown. (But they also do love Ellington's music...) It was a bit ironic that we were playing indoors, so we couldn't enjoy the good weather. But the 'Theater aan de Parade' prooved to be a sublime venue to play at! A very nice stage, with a beautiful grand piano, and some unbelievable microphones made it look like some kind of studio session. Making music can be so easy when you're playing at a place like this! Fortunately, even though the weather was to good to be true, the audience decided to stick around to see us play, and made us feel like home. On stage, we had a great time since it had been a while after the David Murray tour. Jeroen and Pascal were playing on top of their game and Joris and I couldn't ` be more greatfull! Time does fly when you're having fun, so it was over in a flash!
The Hague Jazz - may 24, 2008 After the North Sea Jazz Festival left The Hague, some brilliant minds came up with an alternative festival. The Hague Jazz was held for the third time this year and people are already calling it the new North Sea. And how hard can it be, when it's held in the same venue... We were pretty early so we had some time to walk around and take a look at some other great bands. We also had this great meal in a room that came pretty close to the real deal... Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if Michelin would give them a star next year! I suppose we were a little bit spoiled after the Duketown gig, so we had a little bit of hard time playing as the stage and the room weren't working in our advantage. Especially Jeroen had to do his upmost to hear himself and it had been a long time since he had worked this 'hard'. But then there was Gert, who again took care of our sound and made sure it was great for the audience! Thanx man! We had a blast, the audience loved it, again, and hopefully we'll be back next year with more hardcore jazz!!! Special thanks go out to Joost Schuurman, who made some beautiful pics of us at The Hague Jazz 2008!
april 09, 2008 - Watch my car!!!Sometimes you get somewhere and you don't know if you have to be laughing your balls off or you should be terrified. Today we had a combination of both. We were invited to play as the closing act of this seasons jazzseries held by the Arnhem Jazz Society in a wonderfull attic above Cafe Verheyden. The only was that we had to get to the third floor, and that the stairs were really small. So all the instruments, including the Fender Rhodes of our key-man Rembrandt Frerichs had to be hoisted up in a little wooden box... The hoist was succesfull, so we were able to play, and my car stayed in shape! As usual, we had a blast playing for such a beautiful audience. Everyone was inspired and that inspired us as well, so we played to our upmost! Please keep and eye on our agenda as we might get back to Arnhem in the next season! april 01, 2008 - Your Favorite Band might be at your Favorite FestivalIt's been a while since we added news to the site. Too bad, but now there is news: we will be playing at two of the best festivals around: Jazz in Duketown and The Hague Jazz. Jazz in Duketown is a legend of it's own, going strong after 35+ years. We will be playing in the 'Theater aan de Parade', a really nice venue next to the big church called the St Jan. Date and time haven't been confirmed yet, so please keep your eyes and ears open for us!!! Two weeks after that we will be playing at a so called 'rookie-festival'. The Hague isn't the replacement of the North Sea Jazz Festival, but it looks alike! Hopefully it will one day become even more succesfull than it's big brother. This year will be the third edition and we are playing on the second day, saturday the 24th of may. We will be the last band to play in 'Mariska's'. Be there!!! On both occasions, Jeroen van Vliet and Pascal Vermeer will be joining us on stage, so you can imagine that we really are delighted!!! january 05, 2008 - Happy New Year!!!And yes, we touring again! It's great to get back on the road, even if it's only 20 miles, to play another gig with the greatest band you can image... Today we played 'De Toonzaal' in 's-Hertogenbosch, an old synagogue turned into a cultural venue in the centre of the city. On stage we were joined by good old Mark Schilders, one of the biggest talents of Dutch jazzdrumming, and Pieter de Graaf, a very talented pianist who has his own trio and is the sideman of Wouter Hamel. It was Pieters initiation into the world of TNQ. After a good Indian meal it was time to hit the stage for two sets of thrilling nu-bop, as we like to call it! Both Mark and Pieter were playing great, and Joris really is growing, and growing, and growing. He's at the top of his game, and only getting better! We played two sets which contained a lot of the songs we played with David, but also some old hits, and some new tunes. And they all worked really well! We played two steaming sets, hit the showers and went back home; this was a great kick off, happy new year everybody!!! december 11, 2007 - The New Quartet meets David Murray, tourlog: the aftermathNext stop: nowhere land... I couldn't tell you if it was a short night or a verrrrry looooong daaaaaaay... Fact is that David and his family had to be at the train station by 09:00 am. So we decided to drive at 07:30 am. As I didn't get home before 04:00 am and I had to unpack the car & release all the adrenaline out of my body, my alarm clock woke my up far too early! Damn! Mr Murray & family didn't get down 'till 08:00 am, and due to Dutch traffic I decided to bring them to the Antwerp train station, where we had a quick goodbye, and he made it on time to catch the train... On the way there finally was time for coffee..!!! But what a week!!! I must say, this was the best week I've ever had, and the best concerts I (but also TNQ) have ever played! It was so nice to be on stage with 5 people that interacted perfectly with eachother. The band itself, with Joris, who stepped up to the next level and played the most beautiful solo's, the key-magician Jeroen van Vliet and master of drums Pascal Vermeer was the kick-ass jazz band we always refer to, but more than that!!! And David's energy was just thrilling..! I still wonder how he does it... And how nice is it that our concerts in Tilburg, Utrecht and Eindhoven have been recorded, audio and video, but there are also some beautiful pictures made of it all... Thanks to our friend Fred Timmers, who filmed the concert in Paradox. You can find the clip he made on the 'home'-section of our website, but you can find more of us on his YouTube account! Thanks Fred! The pictures of the tour will soon be uploaded to our site, but you can already find them here, and you can also read a review of our concert in Paradox here..! And now we're going to aim on 2008. Hopefully we can play some more beautiful concerts around Holland... See you on the road!!!
december 10, 2007 - The New Quartet meets David Murray, tourlog: day 05The Grand Finale: Wilhelmina, Eindhoven Three down, one to go... I wish it would be the other way around, because I'm enjoying this far too much to let it go so early.. And still; we're just getting the hang of it. Oh well, one more, and let's make it one to never forget!! If you stand in front of Wilhelmina, you wouldn't even think about the opportunity of it being a jazzstage..! Even when you walk in, it looks like a rock 'n roll kind of place... I don't know how they did it, but within an hour, it turned into this lovely jazz-bar... We started a little bit late today, because David had some trouble finding Wilhelmina. A taxi driver helped him out and showed him the way, so we could start with just a little delay... But in the meantime, the place filled up completely. Again a (nearly) sold out venue; brilliant!!! What more can we tell then that you should've been there!! Two sax-cats who burned the papers standing in front of them, nearly blowing away the first row; a piano player that hit the keys harder than he ever did before, leaving a detuned piano at the end of the evening; a drummer that kept on firing crashes, kicks and cross-rhythms over the stage; and a bassplayer solid as rock and keeping the engine steady..! It all went by in a flash, and ended all too soon! But we'll be back!!
december 09, 2007 - The New Quartet meets David Murray, tourlog: day 04Getting the hang of it..: Jazzpodium DJS, Dordrecht Yeah, we're getting the hang of it!! This night was even shorter, as today was going to be an afternoon gig. Small eyes, no time for breakfast nor for coffee, no time for a warming up... Get it the car and drive!!! ('I really hope I'll survive today', a really tired Joris said when he got into the car..) My first impression of the DJS venue in Dordrecht was that it looks more like my parents' living room than a real stage. But it turned out to be this warm and cosy place with great stage, sound and atmosphere! Joris' told me not to bring the second enclosure for my bassamp, but I was really glad I did, 'cause I needed it!! Anyway, the audience made us feel like home today, and gave us back a lot of energy!!! The show was tight, steamy, loaded, wild, energetic, loud, groovy, ripping, etc etc!! Is there any end to this? Can we go further than this? Just some questions that entered my mind, but there's no doubt about this: the chemistry makes the music go sky-high!! We are so glad with the guys we are on tour with: off corse, David is one of the best tenor players around. His energy on stage is like nothing and no one else! But where would he be without TNQ & the great pieces Joris wrote..? And then again; where would we be without Jeroen van Vliet and Pascal Vermeer, two of the best musicians around!! Jeroen really gave David a run for his money, as he kept on playing during David's solo on 13 Solutions. The two of them ate the chords like hungry wolves, and made it into an inferno! And the crowd loved it!!! We finished it off supremely and took some time to cool down, as things heated up pretty much. After that we packed and headed home, where we enjoyed a great meal, a killing bottle of wine and eachothers lovely company at Meesters! We headed home early, tired but satisfied, again! As for Joris: his playing was breathtaking, and he did proove to be one of the most gifted players around!!! No sign of weariness!! And for the people at DJS: I really hope they find out that the roof is missing... See you next time!!
december 08, 2007 - The New Quartet meets David Murray, tourlog: day 03The 2nd day: SJU, Utrecht O what a night!! I just couldn't close my eyes, thinking about the evening that passed in Paradox, but around 0600 I finally got to sleep. Somehow you get into a 'tourinig-mode', which means everything is focussed on the gig. You get up slowly, take a shower, get some breakfast, and start doing a little workout on your instrument to get the fingers going... Then it's already time to pack your stuff, get into the car and drive... The first TNQ-introduction to the SJU jazzcellar was a great experience! Really nice people and a lovely venue! Setting up was easy, just a short soundcheck, and off you go to the Indian restaurant just around the corner, where we had some really nice tandoori's cooked for us. (if you go there, always ask for HOT!) When it was time to hit the stage, it was clear that the Paradox performance had set things off to another level! Daybreak again prooved to be a great opening song, and David & Joris nailed the piece beautifully! What a vibe and spirit, but especially; what an energy!!! This is great fun!! The rest of the set was as beautiful and energetic as the opening piece..! As the Paradox gig was actually way too long, we skipped a song in the second set, and messed around a little. We started with 13 Solutions, which gave David an intro on bass clarinet... Wow! The sound just thrills!! After The 2nd Day (how appropriate!), where Pascal showed his Elvin skills, and Death of a Ladybird, my favourite piece, we finished ourselves on Of A Different Kind, squeezing out all the energy left inside us! We went home tired but satisfied, and even had a little battle between two VW Passat's on the freeway... (sorry mom, just having fun, and we're still alive!)
december 07, 2007 - The New Quartet meets David Murray, tourlog: day 02First stop: Paradox, Tilburg It's always nice to start in your home town, where you know the people, the venue, the sound, and you don't have to drive hours to get there! Paradox is like home to us, although the smell in the dressingroom even caught us by surprise!! Thanks to the short ride, our get-in was pretty late. We did a little soundcheck with the quartet, after which we waited for David, who decided to do a little site-seeing tour of Tilburg. Unfortunately he walked in the wrong direction, but eventually found the Paradox, which was only a five minute walk from his hotel... After a really quick soundcheck with David, it was time prepare for the show. When we hit the stage, Paradox was semi filled, but after our first song, Daybreak, the place was packed!!! Great vibe and a lovely audience. This might have caused our eagerness to play, 'cause we were on stage for about two and a half hours!?! The quartet played really well and mr Murray fitted in just perfectly..! What a thrilling evening... When everybody headed home, we had our own little celebration, chanting David's Kiama and jumping around in the hall! Four youngsters having fun; unbelievable...
december 06, 2007 - The New Quartet meets David Murray, tourlog: day 01Today was a trip down memory lane; a dark and rainy day, an hour drive to Rotterdam, figuring out where he would arrive, etc. It was like nothing ever happened.... It was great to see David again after three years! We had a safe, but wet, ride back to Tilburg, where we dropped him and his son Mingus, who accompanied him, off at the hotel. Two hours later it was time to rehearse. It was a quick & steamy rehearsal in a small and damp room down in the cellar of the conservatory, but it gave us a great preview to the days that were coming... When all the songs were clear, we wrapped it up and went home. David was obviously tired of the long trip, and we too needed to save some energy... october 29, 2007 - The New Quartet meets David Murray (winter tour 2007)Yes, it's finally going to happen!! If you knew Joris and Jurriaan back in 2004, you might have overheard them talking about the David Murray project. Back then, they were playing in the pH3 (Post Human Trio), when the Dutch Jazz Agency gave Joris a bag of money to do a project of his choice. He chose to do a little tour with tenor legend David Murray (who is also featured on our Links page). We rehearsed in september and we going on tour in december. But bad luck delayed the whole party. Joris was struck with a pretty bad injury and he wasn't able to play for over 6 month... But we're not going to remind him about that, as we don't live in the past... 'Cause nowadays this guy rocks!! Anyway, when Joris was fully revived we were able to re-schedule the tour with David and he was very much willing to come around and play with us!! The pH3 doesn't excist anymore, but now we've got TNQ, so we'll go for that instead! Please check our agenda for all the tourdates and put them in yours!!! The party wasn't complete yet, and so the two giants of Tilburg Jazz, Jeroen van Vliet and Pascal Vermeer, are going to be the special feature on the tour as they will be joining us... Looking forward to it already... october 03, 2007 - Rockin' in the free world...Sick and tired, that's how we feel, but we're still smiling. Last monday turned out to be a blast!!! With many thanks to Rembrandt Frerichs, who really rocked behind his Fender Rhodes. It was a big pleasure to play with such a versitile musician as he is! A lot of interaction on stage, and many things going down at the same time. It's so nice to see how it's possible that the band can change, but the songs, sound & energy still remain the same. You might hear a hook you never heard before, or it might a little more groovy than you're used to, but we like it!!! And then again, Rembrandt fit in perfectly!! september 10, 2007 - TNB (The New Benjamin...)Jurriaan has finally lost his seat, being the youngest member of TNQ... This is as we introduce to you our new member: drummer Mark Schilders will be filling the drumspot from now on. We've known Mark for over a year now, and in that year we've been playing with him on several occasions and he turned out to be one of the most promising young musicians we've ever seen. He seems to fit into the band perfectly, so that's why we asked him to join TNQ, and he proudly accepted! Mark's first gig with TNQ will be on october 1st in 'De Voortuin' in Tilburg. Also joining us will be Rembrandt Frerichs. We met this great pianist at the Deloitte Jazz Award, where he was competing with Joris. He was already very interested in TNQ back then, and now we were able to ask him to join us... Check him out, you can find him on our Links page. august 22, 2007 - THX JHNNo, this is not our way of reviewing the album made by one of Holland's best rock-bands. This is our way of paying tribute to the best band photographer we know: Johan Mol! This guy was introduced to us by the members of Captain Hook, who played at TNQ invites.. in march, and he decided to stick around. You will find a lot of the pictures he made on this site, our MySpace and the TNQ invites... Myspace, but you can also find his own MySpace on our Links page. Please check him out, 'cause he's worth it! And if you ever need someone to take a picture of your band, we highly recommend him!! Here are some pictures he made of us at the Delft Jazzfestival... THX JHN!!!
august 19, 2007 - What a week...Yes indeed, what a week!!! Two gigs with a dreamband, consist in the great Pascal Vermeer and Jeroen van Vliet, who really put the whole thing to another level. And then off course there was the special feature of Tom Beek, one of the best tenor players in this country. The way he adapted to the band and how he fit in, but also the way he played our tunes, is something one can only respect deeply..! We kicked this week off in 'De Voortuin', as we wanted to prepare ourselves for the upcoming weekend; the show on the Delft Jazzfestival. 'De Voortuin' was the same as usual: packed with people (on a monday!!!), full of smoke & bloody hot!!! Tom joined us, as planned at the end of the first set, in the tune Jacob's Blues, and he immediately took the first solo and made the big entrance. And we were off!! Joris and Tom made a little battle, and turned out to be the perfect match as they interacted like they had done it a thousand times before. We left the audience waiting as we promised there would be more to come after the break; and we kept that promise!!! The second set went by way too fast, but it kicked ass, big time! So we ended up in our beds and dreamt about the upcoming weekend, and the great gig that we were going to play... Delft in one word was a blast! We had a great time there, even though we had some small technical problems. But hey, what the funk, we've got Gert!! Our own little miracle, helping us out with his great mixing skills and perfect ears. So all the problems we had on stage, nobody was aware of. Thanks big man!! Again, the gig was great; the audience was great; the band was great, so what more can you ask for..? You can hear two songs on our Music page, one with Tom and one of the quartet. You'll obviously hear how nice it was to be on stage... We just want to thank Jeroen, Pascal and Tom for their great contributions to our gigs and hopefully we can share the stage again in the near future... august 10, 2007 - The New Duo?!?Once more, it's back to two again. One year after we proudly introduced him, we had to let him go again. Patrick Kessels will no longer be part of TNQ, as both sides decided it would be better that way... Thanks Pat for all you've done for TNQ, and we wish you all the best in the future and hope to see you around somewhere, sometime... God's speed our friend... The great Pascal Vermeer will replace Patrick this month in 'De Voortuin' and the Delft Jazzfestival. august 07, 2007 - Coffee anyone??Short but powerfull... If you want to know where we'll be playing in the near feature, please check the HOME or AGENDA pages on our site. (or go to our MySpace) Somehow, we have encountered some problems regarding the maintenance of our site, which has been an issue for ages now, but we're getting at the end of the tunnel! Soon there will be a new and improved TNQ site with lots of fun! may 07, 2007 - Joris @ Deloitte Jazz AwardThis wednesday, may 09, Joris will be playing in the semi finals of the Deloitte Jazz Award. As usual, he will be playing his ass off, fireworks guaranteed!! We wish him all the best, but we're very confident... Good luck, dude!! april 19, 2007 - Cleaning out the closetAt the moment, we're busy to clean out and improve our website. In the near future we'll be changing a lot, and adding more pics and music, so you can see more of your favourite band! First off, you can find two new tracks in the MUSIC section of this site. We made these semi-live recordings in march in Paradox. Check them out... april 13, 2007 - The day after...If you didn't show up yesterday in 013, I guess you missed a whole lot of fun... The place was steaming and from an artistic point of view it was one of the best evenings yet! First of all we would like to thank Susanne Alt, who played this amazing set yesterday together with her great band; Thijs Cuppen, Sven Schuster and Philippe Lemm. Thank you so much, Susanne, and we hope to have back again!! After Susanne's great performance it was time for us to finally present TNQ XL. It was a lovely day, not only outside, but especially inside 013. We had a great afternoon with Ben van den Dungen and Thomas Martens, who both showed us that they fit in perfectly in the TNQ XL line up. The sound of Joris and Ben together was big and tight, and they teamed up to reach great heights. Thomas showed us that he's a guitar wizard with a little bit of green delay. :P And we shouldn't forget about Daan Herweg, who showed us that he really is amazing and the right guy for this kind of job. You'll be seeing much more of him in the future!! So we did a little rehearsal in the afternoon, had a great meal, with some wine, watched a lovely concert, and than it was our time to rock! And so we did!!! Damn, this set was really killing. The two horns blowing like hell; a guitar moving subtle through the music, appearing on the surface now and than; this kickass piano player, hitting the keys as hard as he possibly could; a bassplayer keeping the thing on the road; and of course our own animal, Patrick, who kept firing off the rocket over and over again... This was everything we could possibly dream about, and more!!! Thank you Ben, Thomas, and Daan, for playing along with us, we'll certainly remember this for a long time. And also a very big 'thank you' to Gert Wiersema jr, who has prooved to be a very promissing sound engineer. Not only as a FOH engineer for Jan Smit, but now also for TNQ!! You've got two more chances to come around and drink a beer in our lovely jazz club. First there will be the fourth TNQ invites evening on the 10th of may 2007, when we will invite Sanne van Hek's 'Network of Stoppages', and the Mike Roelofs Trio. For more info, please check the TNQ invites myspace. The link can be found under the flyer, or in the link section of this site...
april 07, 2007 - Joris' breakthrough..!?!We're very proud to announce that Joris has been selected for the semi finals of the Deloitte Jazz Award 2007!!! Together with 5 other nominees he will be playing on the 9th of may in Lantaarn & Venster, Rotterdam. And if he gets through, he will be playing on the 13th of june in the Bimhuis, Amsterdam. It's a great honour to be selected for this price, we are very excited and confident that he will show everybody what he's all about!! april 05, 2007 - The New Quartet invites.... Ben van den Dungen!!!Next week, on thursday 11th of april, TNQ will present their new formula, or you might call it superband; TNQ XL. There's not much difference with the good old TNQ, but the band will expand a little. Guitar and tenor saxophone are to be added to the line up. For both instruments we've got really great guests, and we are looking forward to get on stage with them!! First of all, on guitar, there's the young, but extremely talented Thomas Martens. At the moment he's finishing off his bachelor study at the the conservatory of Tilburg, where he studies with Edoardo Reghini and Peter Mingaars. You'll be seeing a lot of him the next couple of years!! On tenor, we've got a veteran and superhero; mr Ben van den Dungen!!! This guy is amazing, and hopefully he'll blow off the roof of 013. You might know him from his collaborations with Jarmo Hoogendijk, or his work with Nuevo Manteca and the Cubop City big Band. Anyway, we are very proud that he's willing to come along to our Cave. Behind the piano will be Daan Herweg, a young and very promissing piano player, who was in the Batcave last month with Captain Hook. Come and check these guys out!!! february 19, 2007 - Invites goes MySpace!!Thanks to Joris, there a MySpace site dedicated to our TNQ invites... project! You'll be able to find all the information about the project, which bands are playing and how they sound! Check it out here, and become our friend!! february 17, 2007 - ...Too bad it's been so long since there was a good update on this site, which we regret. But we'll try to make it up to you! First out, we would like to thank all of you for showing up on thursday in our dark jazzclub, we had a blast and hope you did as well! It was a long day and we did our upmost to improve as much as possible, so we could even surpass last year, and I guess we did. What you didn't know? We took out the old stage and replaced it with a new one, and you're up for a big surprise when you do that! Our fireplace is burning on old, broken drumsticks; we're selling sticky guitar picks, you can find them in our online store..; and we even released two metalheads who had been trapped underneath the stage for three weeks. How they survived? By drinking the leftovers from other bands who passed by... I guess Forrest was right: life's like a box of chocolates..., you never know what you're gonna get... After we put in the stage, put on the piano and set up the FOH (front of house; often used on festivals and big stages, but I guess it will do in our Cave as well...), Gert treated us with some nice 'pink noise'. And noise it was!!! While Gert was setting the eq with his noise, we put up our latest gadget: a xxl, baby blue The New Quartet invites... backdrop. So you can't forget where you are... It looks great up there!! By now we were fully set and ready to welcome Mr Martin Verdonk, our guest. We adjusted our music a little to Mr Verdonk, and picked the pieces that were a little bit more into the even eighths feel, so Martin could fit in. (We both hate swing with the good old conga's underneath...) The sound check went quick and smooth, so we went down to relax and enjoy the diner cooked for us by 013's own Jamie Oliver!! Patrick hit the jackpot, as he got to enjoy his Chili twice!! You lucky bastard! Then it was time to hit the stage. We were the first to go on, as we thought it be cool to pick things up where we left them a year before. And I must say, it was great to be back on stage again. The concert was really great I guess, and it was a blast to hear so much percussion and drums in our music. (I had the lucky spot on stage, right between Martin and Patrick; lucky me!) Thank you Martin!! Normally we would send you over to the NPSOutput site, where you could listen the whole thing over again. Ben Mendez will record all our concerts this year. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the power supply, and so we lost all of our takes... (back to DAT again??) Hopefully, Ben can recover some our songs, so you can listen to them really soon. But we'll keep you posted! That's it for now I guess. Hopefully we'll be writing again soon, as we are planning to record some things... We might even invite you to create some audience noise... See you soon, and here's a great pic of Joris and Martin hanging around our beautiful TNQ sign...
december 16, 2006 - Short Update.Somehow the best time to write in this section is at night. Even though we should be sleeping. Anyway, there's always time for some good new, I guess. As you all might know by now, we are going to host a new night in 013, Tilburg in 2007. This will be the next episode of our "The New Quartet meets..." night, where we started having fun and met some great people! The format is still the same, but we've changed the name into "The New Quartet invites...", as we are going to make way for some new great, young Dutch jazz bands! We will be able to fill you in completely really soon, so keep yourself up to date! But of course, we will be playing ourselves and hopefully we're going to surprise you with some really nice guests. The first one was confirmed today, but I'm not going to tell you, haha! But I'll tell you this; bring your dancing shoes, because if this guy isn't going to get moving; nobody will!!! december 3, 2006 - We Went To The Moon And Back...As I'm writing this, 04:15 am, the sweat is still dripping off my back, and I can't sleep because the adrenaline keeps on pumping thru my body. Outside the sun is breaking thru the clouds, and the birds are already waking up... Tonight we played the 013 clubnight LOOOS! for the second time, and we had a great time! We were kicking it and I loved every second of it! It's so nice to see so many of you out there, digging our music, that's a great feeling and very encouraging. Please keep doing that! We definately hope you had a blast as well! But from this spot, I would like to thank Pascal Vermeer for the marvellous job he did tonight, playing our music for the first time, and playing it like this; respect! It was a great honour to play with you, and very inspiring as well! Thanks a lot! I'm really looking forward to this week, as we are going to do two more shows... Please pay us a visit, come hang with us, and enjoy the music!! november 10, 2006 - The Fireworks will be starting early this year!!Dear friends, 2006 has been a heavy year for TNQ. Some great things have happened; we had a blast playing in the Batcave for so many of you; we played at the B-There festival and the #1 jazz bar in Rotterdam called Dizzy… It was great!! On the other hand, we had to cancel the last date in the Batcave with Yuri Honing, and unfortunately we had to say goodbye to two of our original band members; David Vandermaesen and Jacob Bedaux… Anyway, we ain’t gonna leave like this..! No way! We’re going out with a BOOM! It is all going to happen in the second weekend of December. First all, on Friday the 8th, we’ll be playing in Paradox, a great venue in Tilburg, where we’ll play together with our brothers from Rundfunk (they rock!) and Harmen Fraanje, a great piano player, will be helping us out on the piano… On top of all of this, there will be a very special guest appearance by the great tenor saxophone player Boris Vanderlek! You might know him from the Wild Romance (with Herman Brood) or the jazz band The Houdini’s. Come check it out! If you’re attending the conservatory, you get in for free!!! Two days later, on Sunday the 10th of December, we’ll be playing at the NuMoonFest 2006 in Lantaarn & Venster, a beautiful theatre in Rotterdam. Please check out our agenda for the details… This is it for now, but hopefully we’ll be back soon with some more news… Take care and keep buzzing!
september 16, 2006 - Getting the hang of it...You should have "Been-There..." But you weren't. Too bad, 'cause you missed a whole lot of fun and energy! The B-There festival turned out to be a really nice event, with a lot of nice bands like Pete Philly & Perquisite and The Sheer, but also great comedians like Jan Jaap van der Wal, and of course your favorite band: The New Quartet! For us it was a reality check, as we got to play for a lot of youngsters, and they seemed to dig it! The room was smoking, but we couldn't have done it without the DJ's of Rundfunk, you rock guys!, our first lady Marilot, please sing for us.., and Gert, the best sound engineer available! Check out the gigs section on our site! There are some really nice gigs coming up in Dizzy's (Rotterdam) and Paradox. But even if you don't want it, you'll get our mailing anyway... Joining on stage will be the extremely gifted pianists Jeroen van Vliet and Harmen Fraanje. B-THERE! september 08, 2006 - We're NEW....., again. It's been a busy summer this year, and as indicated above, the line-up has changed. After our concert with DJ Maestro, David and The New Quartet decided to go seperate ways, as it would be best for both of us. As you all know, David is a very promissing vibraphone player and composer, and is going to focus on that... We wish him all the best and hope to keep contact for further collaborations in the future. So now we would like to introduce our new drummer.... .... ... ... rolls please ... .. .. .. .. . . . . can't hear you ... ... .. . . .... . ... . .. .. . .... ... please give it up for .. . . .... . .. ..... . ..... . ... PATRICK KESSELS!!!!!!!! Taaataaaaa... Patrick is a very, very promissing drummer, and fitted in with the group right away. We already did some rehearsels with him, and he will join us for the first time on the B-There Festival in Den Bosch, this weekend. I hear you wondering, what happened to Paradox Open Air? Well, we hope you didn't end up there, unless you were wearing your squash outfit. Somehow the city of Tilburg funked up, because they planned a little squash event there. Too bad for the Paradox, the festival, and the bands. Nevertheless, we will be playing in Paradox on the 8th of december, with a special guest and the guys of Rundfunk. We keep you informed! Back On The Road AgainAfter a period of silence, here we are again to update your life with TNQ! The last couple of months we have been busy creating new repertoire (check out MySpace.com if you want to hear it, you'll be surprised..!) and we are starting off with a new evening, together with 013 and DJ Maestro, the guy behind the Blue Note Trip cd's. In the concept, TNQ will start off with a hot and steamy set of live jazz, after which mr Maestro will kick in and let you boogie down into the night. The first evening in going to be on friday the 30st of june, so be there! If you want to come, send an email to us, 'cause we've got 15 free tickets!! More good news on the personal side of life. Jurriaan has been awarded with the 'Jacques de Leeuw Jong Top Talent Prijs 2006', which will hopefully give him and TNQ a lift. Well, that's it for now, but we'll promise you we will update the site frequently from now on! We hope to see you in 013 at the end of the month. Keep up the good work!!! |
